Every Tuesday the USPTO publishes newly approved trademark applications in its Official Gazette. Publication opens a 30-day window for anyone who would be harmed to oppose.

The USPTO doesn't write to you when someone files a mark like yours. Large brands pay a watch service to read the Gazette for them every week. Similark does that reading for the brand owner.

Publication starts a clock.

During the window, you or your attorney can file an opposition, or ask for more time. Extensions can stretch it, but never past 180 days from publication.

When the window closes, the application can go on to register. Challenging it after that takes a cancellation proceeding, which is slower and usually costs more.

Plain English, every time.

  1. Watch. Add your mark by its USPTO serial number, or type the words and choose what you sell. We start with a look back over the last twelve months.
  2. Match. Every new filing is checked for marks that look alike, sound alike or share your wording, in your class or a related one. Each match says why, in one line.
  3. Alert. The day a match is published for opposition, you get an email with the applicant, the dates and the deadline. A weekly digest covers everything else.

What we don't do. We're not a law firm and we don't give legal advice, file trademarks or draft oppositions. When a match needs action, take it to a trademark attorney. Word marks only for now; logos come later.
